For those who aren’t familiar, The Checkout is a great jazz radio show hosted by Josh Jackson that features new music coming out of the New York jazz scene. They’ve selected our performance of “Don’t Be Scurred” as one of the highlights from WBGO’s 2012 JAM Festival!

You can have a listen to the May 8, 2012 show on their website, or download the podcast in iTunes. My interview begins around 29:16 into the program.

Check it out!
-Jeremy

The concert is titled Global Standards and will feature classic jazz standards by Gershwin, Porter, Rodgers, and others set to rhythms from around the world. For the first time I’ll be playing strictly percussion with the band... cajon, congas, doumbek, and an array of noisy things. Joining me are Jesse Lewis on acoustic guitar, Matt Aronoff on acoustic bass, and for the first time, Jason Rigby on tenor saxophone. I was invited down by my friend Owen Rockwell, who is a great percussionist and educator, to teach with the my good friend Mangue Sylla. The trip was short and sweet... I gave a jazz drumset masterclass, Mangue taught traditional West African drumming, and we gave a performance lecture on our work combining the two styles. The southern hospitality was abundant and the students were great! Check out my updated “teaching” page for more about current clinic offerings.

Also in the news... my first recording with the Juilliard Jazz AD Ensemble is out! We recorded in September with guest artist Wycliffe Gordon. The album features a diverse mix of Mr. Gordon’s originals and student compositions, including a septet arrangement of my own “Don’t Be Scurred”. Availability of the album is currently limited to direct sales at Juilliard Jazz events, so come check out a concert and grab the new CD.

Check the calendar for upcoming gigs including the debut of a new project featuring Jason Rigby, Jesse Lewis, Matt Aronoff, and myself on world percussion at Bloomingdale School of Music in December.

Thanks for stopping by.
-Jeremy
